Jets Will Take Off for San Diego

Baltimore's blowout win today in Foxborough means the Jets will not get their second trip to Indianapolis in four weeks. Gang Green will head out to San Diego instead for a date with the Chargers.

I can't say playing a team with an 11 game winning streak will be easy, but I am of the school of thought that avoiding Peyton Manning whenever possible is a good thing.

We'll have plenty to come this week on the matchup, but my initial reaction is the Jets have a much better chance than a lot of people think. The Chargers are pretty one-dimensional on offense. Their offensive success is pretty much all due to the pass. As we know, the Jets have a great pass defense. San Diego also struggles on defense against the run. We'll see how it plays out.

Here's what we do know. The Patriots may hang a banner as AFC East Champions, but the last team standing in the 2009 season from the division is the New York Jets. Perhaps we'll look back in the future and remember this day as the one the torch was passed.

Let's Not Get Ahead Of Ourselves Just Yet

I never thrilled to see the Jets have to go out west to win a game.

I’m happier with facing San Diego. We have a much better chance at stopping their passing offense than stopping Peyton in my mind.

San Diego

2nd worst running team

Ranked 20 in Rushing Defense.

This suits us well as we sometimes struggle to stop the run and on offense we run like crazy

The Chargers gameplan always is to score points early, through the passing game, to force the opposition to give up on running the ball.

According to Football Outsiders' ranking,

The Jets are the number one overall defense, number one against the pass and eighth against the run. The Chargers are the number one offense, best passing game, but dead last running the ball. I’m not that much up on advanced stats in football, but the only concern I have about the defense is playing a good running team(I wouldn’t be if Jenkins was healthy). I think if any team has to depend on passing the ball against us, we’re gonna win.

Colts or Bolts

Neither has much a running game and neither are good against the run. But at least Colts have 2 deadly DE to rush the passer and I’d rather face Rivers over the more experienced Manning any day. I haven’t seen any Chargers game but the Colts have 4 legit receiving threats whereas Chargers’ rely mostly on Jackson and Gates.

With Revis

you can pretty much take Jackson out of the equation.

But it’s better only have to worry about one or two guys than three. I think Rhodes is gonna have to have a big game

I think we have a good chance against San Diego, obviously won’t be taking them lightly, they for a bye for a reason, they are a good unit, and can cause problems, however were a good unit and we can also cause problems, should be one hell of a game. Form teams going at each other. Always been a fan of Rivers, so it’s going to be tough to shut him down, keep the faith though.

Floyd.

He is gonna cause nightmares for Sheppard or Lowery. This guy is legit. But we match up with SanDiego very nicely, and before Saturday they were our last playoff win.

by Jerrad p on Jan 10, 2010 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Floyd is lefit but so is Sheppard, he really hasn’t gotten the props he deserves this year. After a shaky start he has really come on. Revis is the main reason our pass defence is ranked top, but Sheppard has more than carried his weight.

Kerry Rhodes Will Be A Big Key In This Game

If he brings his “A” game, we have a good shot, but if he doesnt, it wont be close. I think he will though.

by YankeesJets on Jan 10, 2010 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

prob should give Lito more credit but I’ve seen this guy play and I’d say he’s the best no. 2 we will play this year. outside of welker.

by Jerrad p on Jan 10, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

I still like Lito, Floyd has a ton of talent without a doubt, but I really can’t see him dominating Lito. We will have to dial up some blitz packages and not give Rivers time to find his down field target. it’s going to be a massive challenge, but we are up for it.

They have to account for Gates

Blitzing also will allow LT or Sproles to break off big plays with dump offs from Rivers. The Jets need to just keep the ball out of Rivers hands. If they just pound the ball and control the clock, we have a chance. If Schotty tries to get Sanchez more involved, we will be in deep trouble.

Rivers

Had the highest pass rating against the blitz this year.

Congrats on the win, i always liked the jets.

Size worries me.

I say Lito on Floyd is the x factor because Revis should lock down Jackson. that or krhodes trying to stop gates.

I Hope The Jets Dont Try To Cover Gates In The Red Zone Like They Did TG

If the credo that a great D always beats a great offense holds true, our Jets might be moving on. I wanted to play the Colts for redemption but this will do.

I really think the Ravens are gonna knock the Colts off

The Colts have never liked playing physical teams. Todays win will have that Raven team bursting with confidance. I think the Colts arent going to know what hit them.

I agree, I thought the Ravens would go into New England and beat them today, and I think they will go into Indianapolis and do the same.

Frankly...

I would have taken any team in the post season against Indy. I think we could have beaten them and I think the Ravens are going to beat them.

Conservative play is for wussies and going into the post season with two losses and real weak feeling is never a good thing.

takeoff for san diego

well fellow long time jet fans going into my 30 th year , i could not be more happier, the never say die attitude that we have showed has been remarkable.i have always felt even in our lean years we have always been known as one of the hardest working teams in football but since the arrival of " the rexercist" we show that even more, the way i look at this guys, we are playing with house money, nothing to lose since we are not supposed to be here according to the so – called experts. the pressure is all on san diego . like every other die hard i want to see a magical run but regardless we have a bright future and things will get even better, mark really showed me alot yesterday playing in cold and playing as accurute as he did. but i am ready to play the chargers and give it everything we got.like rex said “we will be a very hard team to send home” so lets not drink the kool aid yet as mark said and play jets football one game at a time. it all about heart,

I think the Jets have proven that they do belong, I mean beating the same team twice is no fluke.

That the Jets have a really good chance against San Diego…I see a lot of match-up problems for the Bolts and I don’t think they are too happy about playing you guys.

Has anyone mentioned. . .

The fact that the Charger starters haven’t played in two weeks? I think that is huge especially since the Jets have played at a playoff level for 3 straight weeks now. They will be a lot more intense than the Chargers.

Bengals fan here, Congratulations on the win.

We tried our best, but you played a very good game and deserved to win. The Bengals are much improved and I am proud of them. As I have said before here on this site, I expect both of our teams to be better next year. We, I think played pretty tough. Benson had a good day but it just wasn’t enough. No excuses. Good luck with the Chargers.
