I'm Sick and Tired of the Colts Game
First, I do feel a little sorry for Indy Fans who shelled out $150 and basically watched a Preseason Game 4 type game. I know I'd be pissed off if it were me. But sometimes I pay $60 for pay-per-view boxing for a match that only goes 2 rounds. Also I go to baseball games and the parent team has called up all the prospects because of injuries in the majors and now the Major League team is full of rookies and the AAA team is now full of AA prospects too. I guess in a live environment you have to be willing to accept that risk.
But, on the other hand, the only reason anyone cares about the Colts is
- because they did this at the sacrifice of their perfect season and
- because it keeps the Jets in the running for a post season bid where 7 teams are all vying for 2 spots.
Let's face facts: If the earlier games ended differently and any one of the 3 teams that had to win actually won their game, the Jets would have been eliminated from the post season before their game started, and the Colts would have still rested their players and lost the game and their perfect season. Then most of the complains in the NFL and media (aside from Colts fans re: the perfect season) would be non-existant. So this is more about the perception that the Jets got a gift than anything else (and from those 6 other teams fighting for the playoffs)
If one of those 3 teams last week were playing the Lions or some other rebuilding franchise, would be all be moaning about how they have an easy win? No. Cause that is how the schedule works out, and sometimes you are in a weak division and play lots of weak teams and make the playoffs where better teams playing tougher schedules do not. Not only are people mad about this spot because its the Jets who benefit, but also because it doesnt seem fair for a good team to lose to a lesser team simply to preserve their players.
The fact that the Jets NEEDED to win that game was irrelevant. I agree with the other folks who said if these bubble teams got it done the other 14 or 15 weeks, they wouldn't have to hope for an easy match-up (either by schedule or personnel decision) the last game of the season. The Jets didn't get it done, they had the Colts next on the schedule, and had to play them for the win.
The Jets went to Indy, played the Colts and won. I agree with Rex that he can't choose which players are on the field for the Colts, so as far as he's concerned, the Jets did what they had to do to win. This ISNT the preseason and the Jets were under no obligation to bench their starters too... Plus, the Colts weren't able to build a huge lead after 40 minutes of game play - only 5 points, so it wasn't like the Jets were just hapless beneficiaries of circumstance.
Do you remember a few years back when the Patriots were on their perfect season run and they ran up scores on the opponents. It was driving fans and the media nuts! Let's assume that it was done to help break all the single season records. Everyone (outside of NE) argued at the time that it wasn't in the spirit of the NFL to do that, and the Pats should put their backups in after a while. That is literally the complete opposite argument people are making here with the Colts (with the key difference being that this time it cost the Colts the game. I think that a team ultimately can decide who to play and when.
Lastly, I saw another interesting point that the Colts playing their backups isn't only benefiting the starters and the Jets. Suppose that the Colts suffer an injury in the playoffs (Manning or another key position player). Asking the backups - who are NFL players waiting for their big break, btw - to get in there and finish the playoffs is to be expected. Perhaps you are doing the team a huge favor by seasoning some of your rookies and backups where you can so when you do need to call on them, they have some actual game experience against an opponents "A" team. It's called DEPTH, but I realize most fans have no idea what that is.
Personally, I don't agree on completely resting starters because I think it ruins momentum and that the bye week doesn't always lead to a sharper team, sometimes it is disruptive. I think reducing carries, and limiting game time is a good idea. If the Jets had Home Field locked up I wouldn't be against splitting time with Clemens or Ainge, and also wouldn't be against playing Woodhead more or giving Wright and Clowney some more action. Hunter and Turner too. If we were 14-0, I would have waited for a bigger lead than 15-10 though!
Just some thoughts.

I'm tired of repeating myself
Basically I agree with you.
1)If the Colts had been demolishing us, had benched their starters, and then we had won, you could say it was a gift. But they were only up by 5.
2) If you consider yourself a top team, you should have good backups. Suppose some of your starters got injured? The backups would have to go in for them. Besides, they were NFL players chosen to be on that team and with the experience of playing in games before (OK, except Painter), not scrubs off the street.
3) This whole thing of sitting starters to rest them for playoffs is stupid – there is no proof at all that it makes them play better later. It might actually work the other way around – they get rusty.
4) By the way, the Colts left their starting offensive line in, and it was that line that allowed the sack by Pace (a starter but not one of our more heralded ones) and TD by Douglas (isn’t he a backup?)
dude it was 10-9 at the half basically, with all starters in.
Whos to say if they keep the starters in, we just beat them by less…

From a Colts fan;s point of view
We stopped trying earlier than when Peyton took his final snap. Freeney/Mathis were only playing on pass rushing plays. Not even that. Sometimes even they would sit. Bethea took many plays off. Brackett was the only defensive starter playing the whole game. Also, Wayne didnt play much, neither did Clark. I saw several backup O-liners in the game that led to you guys stopping us in the run. The colts ran the ball on 2nd and longs, when in real games they’d throw short to give peyton easy 3rd downs.
They stopped going for it a long time before peyton came off the field. And @ FlyNYJ, we were up 21-16, with the ball. And you only had 16 thanks to a kickoff return to the house, AND our backup defense in. So, if our backup and some starters held u to 3 field goals in the ENTIRE half, and your only TD was a return KO, and our mainly backup offense had scored 21 points, what makes you think you had a remote chance of winning?? Indy has proved that the score often never reflects the game. As a fan i can say there are games were up by 3 that we are dominating, or times we are in control when down 4. The score can be decieving. Even the final score. It can only be trusted when talking about who WON. clear cut who won. When saying if’s and but’s or “what could have happeneds” the score cannot be trusted. Your offense sputtered against a half speed defense. Our Half speed offense put up 21 on you in the little time they tried.
If the colts played this game like the Pats played week 16 back in ’07, i think we could have won be 21. If we play FULL throttle for 1 entire half, then 2nd half take our team out, i think we could have still won by 10. But we didnt play full throttle outside of like 2-3 drives.
(my Dad about to place a bet)"Hey Karim who do you like in the Colts Game?" "I dont know dad, Haydens out, so is Gonzalez, Bracket, Sanders, Jackson, and maybe Freeney" Dad-"Is Manning playing?" Me-"Yeah".. "Lets go with Indy"

Excuse me
I often said 21-16 when i meant 15-10 sorry! i got 2 games mixed up. So when i say 21 for us, i meant 15, and when i say 16 for you guys, i meant 10! Sorry! its like 5 am here! lol my mistake

Its not about the Colts
The Peyton Manning Colts would have given the Jets a handful, no doubt… but this isnt about the Colts to Jets fans… this is about the Jets playing a game at the end of the season, that happens every year (1st and 2nd seeds resting their starters), yet somehow it only becomes an outcry that the Colts rested because it ruined their perfect season (which most people outside of Indy couldnt care less about) and because it helped the Jets and hurt at least 5 other teams who all needed the Jets to lose to advance their own playoff hopes.

ahahaha, yeah whatever....
it was 10-9 us at the start of the third quarter with all of your starters in.

Why didnt they run the score up then rest?
Cause they couldnt.
If they could have easily beat the Jets they would have. They were gonna have to actually play… HARD. The coach did not want them to play hard.
If your ‘half-speed’ offense was so great, you would have won. You didnt. They didnt want to play hard either.
Your clearly trying to make excuses for the Colts when you dont have to. The Year the Pats went 16-0, the Pats ran up the score before putting in their backups. The colts couldnt do that.
The purpose of the first article is more about how if it wasnt the Jets fighting for a playoff spot, half of these people wouldnt care. And how people cried when the Pats played bloodthirsty all year long.
Be happy no one got hurt. Cause I bet if Wayne went down the way Welker did thisweekend. You guys would want to crucify Management, coaches, and the waterboy.
