Former Patriot QB Kevin O'Connell traded to Jets

As reported by the Boston Globe's Mike Reiss:

Former Patriots quarterback Kevin O'Connell has been traded to the New York Jets.

O'Connell was waived by the Patriots last Monday and was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Lions, who used the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft to select Matthew Stafford.

The Lions turned around today and traded O'Connell to the Jets. O'Connell confirmed his trade, which was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, via an email to the Globe.

It's interesting that the Jets would trade for O'Connell considering like Detroit they drafted their quarterback of the future, Mark Sanchez, with the No. 5 overall pick in April's draft.

New York also has Kellen Clemens and Erik Ainge, who like O'Connell is entering just his second NFL season.

It's possible that Rex Ryan is looking for an edge by bringing in O'Connell to get information on the Patriots, who play the Jets at the Meadowlands on Sept. 20.

He could be our backup QB once Clemens leaves next season, but the info they could get out of him is well worth the 6th or 7th rounder we gave up
