Rex Noncommittal on Shonn Contributing

A few people have been in touch about Shonn Greene and asking when we might see him on the field. Rex Ryan was asked this during his press conference this week and didn't commit to a timetable on Shonn getting some touches with the Jets

"We're just trying to win and if that means Shonn is in the game running the ball for us, great," Ryan said. "But the good thing about this is we are in the win business. If that means we are going to put another defensive player up in his place or in somebody else's place, so be it."

Nobody was more delighted with the pick of Greene than I was, after watching him in college a little, reading about him pre and post draft, as well as seeing just what kind of player and man he was, I was sure this was the right move for the Jets.

Rex decided to go with the extra defensive lineman in Week one which was the sensible choice with Ellis being suspended and the fact that Greene had missed a lot of time towards the end of the pre-season with a rib injury. However he dressed for week two although he never got a touch.

I have a feeling that we may well see him sooner rather than later, maybe not much this week, the Titans are good against the run and poor against the pass, expect to see a lot of play action and a lot of Leon, however sooner or later he will get his chance. I'm confident that a year or two from now. When discussing Shonn we will talk about him sitting out the first two games and finally getting his chance, and being able to use the phrase

"The rest is history"

I liked the pick also

but that doesn’t mean they have to try to force feed him in there to soon. As long as he gets some reps in practice he will be okay, one thing I think that is a bit underrated about our defense is how much they will help our offense in practice. Jones and Washington are a good tandem, no reason to take any reps away from them at this point. Jones will probably be cut in the offseason, so let Shonn keep getting reps in practice and be ready to step in next year to team up with Leon.

Agree to an extent

however although Jones is a work out horse if we are up in the last few minutes, I don’t see the problem with getting Shonn some carrys in game situations. Completely agree that we have a good thing going right now, but would like to see him get in there with the atmosphere and get those first initial touches. Keep it as is for now, but if we are up by 10+ in the 4th on Sunday, would like to see him get a couple of carries, especially if the running game is slow, which it may well be with the Titans having the 2nd best rush defence over the first two games, show they something they haven’t seen much of in Shonn.

Oh definitely...

if there is a chance to get him some garbage time reps, absolutely. I’m with you in that they should get him some reps if it is possible, but just don’t force him in theere when the game is still in doubt is all I’m saying. Not that I don’t think he can handle it, just because I prefer to stick with the known quantities in Leon and TJ in close game situations. I think Shonn absolutely has a future with the Jets, and it is probably later this year. I would have no qualms with him starting a game if Jones went down, I just don’t think they need to force in a 3 RB rotation at this point, unless, as you said, they can get him game reps in a safe situation.

Absolutely

Not much to say other than I agree 100% with that, think he can handle it but no point in changing a winning method taking snaps away from effective backs. I am looking forward to getting a look at him though, even though I think this week is going to be too close for any kind of garbage time.

Yes...

I don’t know what to make of this game really. As was said in a different story here, Fischer is too good a coach to not bring his team in here ready to go. I don’t think there will be any 0-2 on the road feeling bad for yourself type mailing it in for Tennessee on Sunday. The thing is though, the Jets stuffed that running game up last year, and Leon also had a big day himself on the ground. Tennessee has looked terrible defending the pass, so I will say that if the Jets can establish the run early this week it may not be as close as we think. I don’t see the Titans being able to really put more then 14-17 points up at the most, I think we will pull this game out something like 24-10 or 24-13 with a late touchdown to make it look a bit less close then it really was.

What I am really saying is if we can get on the board first, establish a bit of a run

and use playaction and get up 7 or 10 points early, it could be an early night. Tennessee does not have an offense, in my opinion, to come from behind against a defense like the Jets have.

Agree with you there

establishing the run early, is definitely going to be the key to the game. I have a feeling that we will see a little more of Clowney this weekend, like you said, if we open up that run early then the play-action is going to be effective. Like Rex was saying today, they still have players in that secondary, and there stuffing the run so much teams are being forced to pass on them more, so while that isn’t the only reason they have given up yards through the air, it’s part of it. I’m really looking forward to seeing this game, I think it’s pretty unpredictable to be honest.

I’ve always thought Greene was drafted with an eye to 2010. Jones isn’t getting any younger, and cutting him this year will bring big cap savings (assuming there is a cap next year). Greene’s around mainly for insurance.

If he is nursing his ribs, let him get healthy!I am sure that he will get his opportunity when there is chances for him.Right now we aren’t tearing up the ground game like we should and have been passing more than expected.

Dont't think

he is nursing his ribs at all, he is 100% participation in practise and has been for some time. I think it’s just a case of game planning and right now we are happy with Jones and Washington. I just have a feeling we may see him on Sunday, not sure what that feeling is based on, just a gut one.

Playing Greene

I was watching some highlights on Youtube. Ahhhh. Just like TJones he is good as long as there is a giant gaping hole to run thru. Also goes down easy like TJones.

Yeah, usually youtube will tell you all you need to know about NFL players with no game film to go by.
