My All Time Jets 53 man team (plus a coach)

I am a Bills fan, but also an overall NFL fan.  I'm making all time team for all the teams in the league.  Mostly this is based on total contibution to the team, but also some personal opinion too.  One big one here, NO GASTINEAU. He is one of my all time least favorite players. Anyway, here goes:

C- Kevin Mawae, Joe Fields, Jim Sweeney
G- Randy Rassmussen, Dave Herman, Dan Alexander
T- Winston Hill, Marvin Powell, Jason Fabini
TE- Mickey Shuler, Jerome Barkum, Rich Caster
WR- Don Maynard, Wesley Walker, Wayne Chrebet, Al Toon, Laverneus Coles, George Sauer
QB- Joe Namath, Ken O'Brien, Chad Pennington
FB- Matt Snell, Richie Anderson, Bill Mathis
RB- Curtis Martin, Freeman McNeil, Emerson Boozer
P- Curley Johnson
DT- Joe Klecko, John Elliott, Marty Lyons
DE- Gerry Philbin, John Abraham, Verlon Biggs, Shaun Ellis
ILB- Al Atkinson, Kyle Clifton, Marvin Jones, Lance Mehl
OLB- Mo Lewis, Larry Grantham, Ralph Baker, Greg Buttle
S- Bill Baird, Erik McMillan, Burgess Owens, Victor Green
CB- Aaron Glenn, James Hasty, Dainerd Paulson, Bobby Jackson
K- Pat Leahy
KR- Bruce Harper (RB/WR)
Head Coach- Weeb Ewbank

Jets with Bills ties (41): Dave Foley, Ken Jones, Howard Kindig, Brad Banta, Art Powell, Chris Burkett, Lou Piccone, Quinn Early, Perry Richards, Frank Reich, Matt Robinson, Al Dorow, Johnny Green, Mike Taliaferro, Billy Joe, Darian Barnes, Bill Shockley, Clint Haslerig, John Kidd, Sid Youngleman, Karl Wilson, Don Smith, Tom Saidock, Henry Schmidt, Laverne Torczon, Sam Cowart, Jim Haslett, Tim Cofield, Mark Merrill, Rich Lewis, Kenyatta Wright, Bill Atkins, Jim Leonhard, Ray Abruzzese, Cliff Hicks, Willie West, Jerome Henderson, Pete Carroll, Willie Zapalac

7 Pro Bowlers

last year and not one on your list:

Favre (I’d pass on him too, but if I could have him in his prime when he played for GB….., take him over Ken O’ and Chad)
Thomas Jones (but I agree that I’d take Curtis over Jones in a heartbeat)
Faneca (same as Favre)
Mangold (although Mawae is a beast, there is something about a homegrown player like Nick, and Mangold, in all likelihood, may turn out to be a better center)
Jenkins (ditto to Favre and Faneca)
Revis (Come on, Revis is skilled – take him over Aaron Glenn)
Leon Washington (can any KR or PR list be complete without this standout returner?)

Looking for total contibution to the Jets

I did debate on Washington because he is so good. Give him a couple more years and I’d take him over Harper. Revis is skilled, but too short of a track record so far. Maybe someday Sanchez will make the list too.

Re: Sanchez

We can only hope (well, maybe you don’t hope, but Jets fans can only hope)

Good list though. You put a lot of time and thought into it, which is more than most AFC East opponents do on each other’s boards (Jets fans included)

I’m really surprised there’s no Nick Mangold on the list. I know he’s very young, but he’s been as good as anybody in the league since the Jets grabbed him.

Thanks John B

You guys have been polite and cool! Surprised no uproar about Gastineau. Do you guys hate him too?

Gastineau!

A Bills fan creating such a thoughtful list of all-time Jets? I’m very impressed. That said, like him or not, Gastineau was one of the great pass rushers. I think he needs to be on the list-after all, it isn’t a list of the most ego-less Jets of all-time.
I’m thrilled you included Victor Green, one of my faves and one of the big hitters in the league. I was also a big believer in Marvin Jones, but I honestly feel he doesn’t deserve the all-time branding.
And why NOT Keyshawn?? Al Toon figures higher up on the list?

On an official list, Gastineau belongs......but

This is my list, and I just can’t bring myself to do it. He was a nemesis of the Bills, and my least favorite player of the era. Admitted, he is the best DE in Jets history though.

Keyshawn is not on my list, but not just for attitude issues. He just didn’t play for the Jets long enough. Talented, yes, but Al Toon’s total contribution to the Jets is bigger. Toon 3 Pro Bowls, 6605 yards – Keyshawn 2 Pro Bowls, 4108 yards. Rob Moore a good receiver too, but he had 4258 yards and 1 Pro Bowl.

Hopefully Doghnut was kidding about Mangenius. Ewbank has the Super Bowl win and 73 wins as a Jet. Mangini has 23 wins – none in the playoffs.

I promise you he was kidding :-)

All time 53 man team- Why Gastinau

As a Giant fan I am able to look at the Jets more objectively. As much I thought Gastineau was a selfish player, he stills rates ahead of Abraham, who was talented, but often injured ,and unable to fulfill his potential. Gastineaus pass rush through a short period of years, that probably equals or surpasses Abrahams time as a Jet, were better and more impactful, look at the numbers, Abraham wasnt dependable because he was injury prone. What about Larry Grantham?

I have Grantham as a starting LB

Gastineau just always rubbed me the wrong way. I’m sure you have players from division opponents that rub you the wrong way (maybe Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders from the old Cowboys?). Gastineau’s sack dance always got me. The mullett didn’t help me like him either! Bill Romanowski and Bryan Cox are 2 of my other least favorites. There are some Bills I dislike too – Rob Johnson and O.J.
