Do the Jets Still Need a Veteran Backup QB?
If the Jets were to look at a veteran quarterback option in coming weeks, the list would be short. One possibility is the Giants’ David Carr, but only if Andre Woodson, the former Kentucky star, continues to develop as recent reports from training camp suggest. Other possibilities could be San Diego’s Billy Volek or Kansas City’s Tyler Thigpen. Although Thigpen is young and he didn’t win with the Chiefs last year, he is a mobile quarterback who showed a lot of promise in throwing 17 touchdown passes in his 11 starts.

Agreed, but...
I agree that we need some veteran leadership to get these young QBs ready (Sanchez, Clemens, Ainge and Pizzotti have a combined 8 professional NFL starts). But with 5 QBs on the roster (inc. Brad Smith), we’d have to give someone up. My guess is if Clemens isn’t the starter, and all signs are pointing to Sanchez to win the QB battle, then he becomes expendable if a quality veteran QB becomes available.
