Jets Sign Richard Owens
A day after releasing Bubba Franks, the Jets signed tight end Richard Owens.
The 6-4, 273-pound Owens was originally signed by the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2004. The former Louisville product played 39 games in Minnesota from 2004-06. Owens, 28, played 14 games with the Rams in 2007 before getting his walking papers.
Owens may fit the bill for the in line blocker the team needs. I'm still not sure I like the trade of Owens for Franks. If anything happens to Dustin Keller, Franks would have been able to step in and play at a starting level. Right now, there is no backup tight end capable of doing that on the roster.

Keller
Keller is beast and he’s only gonna get better. without another dynamic receiver we’re defiantly gonna need him to be healthy the ENTIRE season. the post does brings up a good point…. if Keller goes down we are screwed in the receiving core. I haven’t seen any games on Richard Owens so i’m not sure what he brings to the table in replacing Bubba Franks. But he is young and healthy so i guess that’s an up side. We got a tough schedule this year and arguably the most competitive division in the league…. if were not gonna rebuild this next season and want to win now we need another badass receiver, say Brandon Marshall? (Sorry i’m not sold on Plax)

I wouldn’t mind if the Jets signed Griese as 3rd String QB. If Keller can’t beat a complete rookie for the starter job, he’s not exactly that impressive as a backup. Ainge and the other QB I’ve never heard of, I wouldn’t want in whatsoever. And lets not forget it wouldn’t be the first time that a Jets QB went down and the backup also got injured.
Ouch!
Oh man…images of Tom Tupa out there…

Well that was because Parcells wanted to save a roster space and put Tupa as the backup instead of the Punter and Mirer was 3rd string.
Not sure the complaint though, I’d prefer Tupa over Mirer. Tupa went t 6-of-11 for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
Mirer in 8 games only managed 5 TDs and a whopping 9 INTs. And If I remember that season right, most of his INTs were at important moments.
yup...
he definitely sucked!

Now that you mention it
I remember being surprised Parcells went with Mirer cold in the fourth quarter of that Pats game. It seemed like Tupa was playing pretty well.

If I remember the game right, Vinny went down around the beginning of the 2nd Quarter. So Mirer at the very least had halftime and the third to get himself warmed up.
I think the problem was that Parcells picked up Mirer as a reclamation project. Unfortunately the word was already out on how to stop Mirer. I never understood why Parcells didn’t go to Ray Lucas sooner who proceeded to finish the season on a 6-2 run. Maybe it has to do with Mirer being drafted right after Bledsoe, or Lucas just looked godawful in practices. I was amazed that Mirer still managed to have a career after his Jets stint for 3-4 more years.
Just a guess
I remember Parcells turning to Lucas for a bit during the critical Week 17 game at Detroit the year before and getting burnt. Perhaps this put Lucas in the doghouse?
