Source: Jets Unlikely To Pick Up Option Bonus On Sheppard
A piece of news that will surprise nobody, Adam Caplan of Scout.com has reported on his twitter page that according to a source the Jets are unlikely pick up the option bonus on Lito's contract, and thus the 2nd round pick that could of been heading to the Eagles is safe in the Jets vault. Let's be honest, it's not just unlikely, it's not happening, no way the Jets pick up that option
For those expecting the #Eagles to get a second pick back in the Lito Sheppard deal, doesn't look like it will happen, source said Sheppard had to play in 85% of defensive snaps, not happening because of the time he missed plus #Jets aren't likely to pick up $10 million option bonus which is due on 3/11.
This can come as no surprise, I think we all thought that this was going to have to be discussed at some point. So what do we do next season? let Sheppard walk and stick with Lowery, or bring in a free agent. Or try and bring Sheppard back on a reasonable deal.
I think Sheppard has performed quite well while he has been on the field, unfortunately that has been far too infrequent. He certainly showed his talent shutting Evans down after that first catch on Thursday, but he does have injury concerns, and those won't go away.
Of course it depends on the asking price, but what do you see the Jets doing next season in regards to their 2nd CB spot?
Personally I think that we should re-work the Lito deal and get him signed up, I like Lowery's potential, but on his day Sheppard is a class above Lowery and acts as a great compliment to Revis.

Maybe not, if we can work out a deal that is beneficial to us and Lito he could be back, I’m sure he is enjoying being on one of the top defences in the league. I’m sure he knew that he wasn’t getting that option picked up.
Just something else that Mike and Rex will have to deal with after the season.

Resigning Lito to a reasonable deal may be tough. His demanding of a new contract was what punched his ticket out of Philadelphia.

Will anyone give him that deal though? he may well go out into free agency and realise he doesn’t have the value that he thinks he does, especially coming off a season where injury issues have plagued him.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you can never underestimate NFL GM’s. All it takes is a desperate one looking to upgrade his secondary to blow up the market.

I’m relying on Sheppard noticing the potential of this team, liking playing for Rex and being in NY. You never know what a guy is looking for in a team, just for a feeling that he will be back next season

Mia just took the lead
If it stands it’s going to get very tight in the AFC east
DO WHAT JOSE REYES DO!!!
He may wait for a desperate team
Someone needs Cornerbacks mid-season every year. Ty Law gets work every year still. He may not get a decent paycheck or an offer from a contender so we could very well see him back for a more reasonable amount of money.
I think he’s a pretty solid number 2, especially when sharing time with Lowery and friends, but not at that price tag. I’d just as soon we try our luck on later round picks.
bring him back
dont want to waste one of our few draft picks on another cb

I would keep him
Why not try to trade Lowery or Strickland (not to mention Kerry Rhodes or Braylon Edwards) for a draft pick instead, and look for some depth?
The offense will need some improvement as well: receivers for the present, running backs for the future (since it’s not clear how many years Thomas Jones has left)
Kerry Rhodes is probably the only one their I would agree with, Lowery has shown consistent improvement and actually looked alright this year, Strickland has practically no value with his string of injuries this year, and we need Braylon, took years to get that physical/tall/fast receiver and I doubt we let him go. We might get some value for Rhodes though.

Lito
Try to resign him to a more reasonable #. We have Shonn Green for backfield help. We really need to start drafting O linemen, as Faneca, Wody and company are getting a little older.
Agreed here, we do need to start addressing it, and that means drafting decent lineman, not 7th round after thoughts like Slausen.

We’re in a good spot in that I really can’t think of too many weaknesses in the starting lineup as long as we resign Braylon. We were discussing defensive line a few weeks ago, but Ellis has come on strong, Jenkins will be back, and Pouha and Devito are playing very well. We could still go DL, but I don’t think it’s as much of a priority as it once was.

Absolutely, I was seriously worried but the defensive line really has come along and Pouha/Devito have been a lot better than I thought they were going to be. So I think we have a lot more flexibility for where we go than we did. We are not a team that has a glaring weakness that we have to address in the first round. We definitely could take the best available player now. S/OLB maybe are the area’s I would look to now.

Too old perhaps?

I would resign Shepperd at the right price.
As long as we are talking draft. Jets should do whatever it takes to get Eric Berry from Tennessee to take Rhodes spot(if they trade him). All of the so called experts are comparing him to Ed Reed. Also doesn’t everyone agree that DT should be a priority? I mean Jenkins doesn’t seem to durable and he is getting older.
While I would love Eric Berry I think it might be too much of an ask to jump up to say a top 5 which is where some of the latest mocks have him going. It would decimate our depth to move up that high on consecutive years. Not sure about the DT position anymore, Pouha has done a very nice job, and so has DeVito filling in. In my mind it’s not nearly as pressing as it was around a month ago

I wouldnt bring him back no matter what the price
Penalties and injuries, thats all he brings.
Definetly need help at CB tho.

I wouldn’t say that was very fair, he had a great game against the Bills, one catch by Evans that went for a long game but then nothing else all night. Penalties haven’t been as big a problem as I thought they were going to be in the pre-season, he seems to be settling in. He is the 2nd best corner back in term of skills on this roster, injuries are obviously a concern

Good point on the penalties.
He seemed to be getting called a lot for holding early in the season. But no flags lately.
and the home of the... JETS!!!
Was just having a quick look through, and we are 4-2 when Lito plays, he as 6 passes defended, 17 tackles and 1 interception , he hasn’t had a single penalty since week 6 and only two penalties on the season. When targeted the receiver he is covering only catches the ball 44% which is 6th best in the league (Revis 2nd holding QB’s to a 40.3% completion) obviously the sample size is smaller and had he played more it would be a little higher, but you can’t discount it entirely. He has given up 163 yards on the season and only 61 after the catch and only 2 TD’s.
All stats taken prior to the Buffalo game
So his stats will probably be better now, because even though he gave up that catchto Evans, he was targeted a few times and Evans didn’t have a single catch after that, and I remember at least two break ups.

Well
U cant credt him too much, there not gonna pick it up.
They see it too, its a no-brainer.
Curtis "my favorite" Martin - 1 of the best!
No way they pick it up, the question is, once the option is declined, do we go back in for him. He knows the option is not being picked up, but I feel that it makes perfect sense to go back in for him, he has steadily improved, discipline is better and statistically he is a very good corner. Got to give guys credit when they deserve it, and I think Lito deserves it. Not enough to pick up that option, but enough to consider bringing him back.
