Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

Hey everyone

I'm John, one of the writers over at SBN's Jacksonville Jaguar blog Big Cat Country. My Jags travel to Jimmy Hoffa's final resting place this Sunday in a battle of 4-4 teams. The winner get's to keep the playoff hopes for one more week, the loser finds themselves with more questions. Mark Sanchez was reportedly a major target of the Jags heading into the draft, so it will be interesting to see him in action. Also, a quick FYI, BCC does a weekly radio show from 10-11pm Wednesday night. JohnB will be joining us to discuss the upcoming game. You'll be able to find that here.

Receving core

Have to admit that I don’t know a great deal about the Jaguars. One player that has really stuck out so far this year is Mike Sims-Walker, what kind of player is he, and how do you think he will match up against Revis, one of the best if not the best corner in the league. Also what other weapons do you have in the receiving core that could cause us some problems?

Luckly yes!

This year the Jaguars has quite good WRs (opposite to the previous years where they were just awful)
Torry Holt is not the future hall of fameplayer he was in St. Louis -but he still can catch passes.
Rookie Mike Thomas is the man of the tricky plays-watch out for him (also he is a veeery good kick returner)
Jarett Dillard another rookie WR who is seeing limited action so far but mostly he do like this-1 catch 20 yards!!!
The TEs are mostly non factors in the passing game but former 1st round pick Marcedes Lewis can be a threat when he didn’t dropping passes.
Aaaand Maurice Jones Drew can just run the ball well, he can catch it too-so look out for him as well.

BUt it alll depend on how good will be QB David Garrard on Sunday. If he will play the way he played yesterday-the passing game will be a threat. If he plays like on Week 8-look for picks

Actully this is the 1st time that our top 10 Offense will play an ELITE Defense like the Jets have-so I’M looking forward to the game

The passing game is at it's best when the running game is clicking

Most of Sims-Walker’s big plays have come on either play action or when the defense was playing run. He’s been able to get seperation against most corners, though obviously Revis will be his biggest test.

Son of a fucking bitch.

I literally just had about 5 paragraphs that I wrote about Jax, not that it is necesarrily worth much, but I have watched them play every week this year, so I probably am more familiar then most Jet fans are with that particular team, and my computer froze. I feel like the girl in the coffee shop in the PC commercial, and how she used to be nervous when doing too much stuff on the computer.

We all know about MJD, he is a stud, no need to elaborate. Garrard is pretty well known also. He can throw the ball well both from the pocket and from the run, and he can make plays with his legs. Sometimes he tries to do too much and he makes mistakes because he doesn’t like to give up on a play. I have seen him tur sacks into first downs, and also turn 5 yard sacks into 15 yard sacks and interceptions. When he stays within himself, very good QB. So far in 2009, he has tended to struggle on the road and be very good at home.

The WR core is solid, lead by their new stud, Mike Sims-Walker. Young kid, 3rd year player out of UCF. He isn’t overly big or fast, listed at 6’2, but he runs precise routes and he will lineup left or right. He is also willing to play the slot, run routes over the middle, and is very good at it. He doesn’t seem to drop the ball either. We all know about Holt. I would stick Revis on MSW and let Holt and the TE’s who include Marcedes Lewis and the former WR Ernest Wilford, try to beat us. These guys have playmaking ability, but aren’t consistent threats yet. Mike Thomas is also a big play threat, in the return game, and on the bubble screen type plays, and could be a key in this game, a lot of quick WR screens are a good counter to a blitz happy defense. Rashad Jennings is also a nice looking RB, though he doesn’t get too many touches yet. They can’t take him for granted when he is in there, he can play, and he broke a big TD run last week.

Jacksonville is different this year in that its their offense that is their strength this year. The defense, while still talented, isn’t the stout group we are used to seeing from a Jack Del Rio coached team. They have Reggie Nelson, a solid safety, and an also pretty solid looking CB tandem of Rasean Mathis and rookie ball hawk, Derek Cox. They have Derrick Harvey, Quentin Groves and Reggie Heyward contributing at DE in their 4-3 scheme, with big John Henderson still in the middle. The one guy who is a stud in this defense is 3rd year player Justin Durant, MLB, and tackling machine. He is the main guy that the Jets will have to find and block on defense because he is a very sure tackler, and he usually doesn’t need any help.

This is a really strange team so far, they have looked very good and also pretty bad at times. If the Jets can get out to a lead early, hopefully they can limit MJD’s carried and they can really tee-off on David Garrard, which should eventually lead to big sacks and a couple of turnovers. If MJD gets going and the Jags can use play action to neutralize the pass rush, Garrard and his friends can do some damage.

And as I saw in a comment down below, Terrance Knighton is the other DT,

a rookie, and he is a load. The run defense has been okay, skewed by the monster afternoon by Chris Johnson, but the pass defense has seemed very vulnerable.

Agree with everything except one thing

on defense:
Reggie Hayward is injured-so our best DE is out since week 1-We have 8(!!!) sack this year; 3 of them was on last week. Harvey and Groves are very disapointing players so far. The were drafted for big price(we trade 5 picks away trading up for Harvey)to have double digit sack numbers-Results-Harvey don’t have a sack this year(last year 2;5…)Reggie Nelson is very inconsistent; specally in tackling-I expet that the Jets wideout will target him.
The Jaguars are very bad putting pressure to the QB; and because of that the pass protection is also receiving very big blows. There was no defense scored TD this year

You hit a home run with that description. The only thing is Ernest Wilford may not play, he got injured. So if he doesn’t play, then rookie 6th rounder Zach Miller, a TE/H-Back would play.

Did you all expect Sims-Walker to have the kind of year he is having?

Also how is your defence against the run?

Sims-Walker has been injured more or less the first two years he was here

He was drafted while he was recovering from ACL surgery and went on IR in his rookie season. In OTAs and training camp the next year, he flashed alot of good things, but his knee started acting up again. Combined with the death of his father, and year 2 was a wash. He injured his ankle in the annual scrimmage this year and was reportedly one of the last guy’s to be kept. It wasn’t until Troy Williamson went down for the year in Week 2 that he’s been a main part of the offense.

Short answer, no.

If we play the 4-3, we’ll do well. If we go back to the 3-4, not so much.

Some of us and I am probably guilty

wanted him to get cut because he was percieved as deadweight that got too injured too much to be of any use.

Our Run Defense is decent, sometimes we tackle well sometimes we don’t, expect 75-150 yards rushing.

He earned the nickname Mike "I Need A" Walker due to propensity for injury - his talent was never questioned

he’s been healthy this year and the nation is beginning to know his name as a result.

The defense against

the run has been really good in spurts but it was also really bad against the Titans in our second game. The team has done well with their run fits, but they missed a lot of tackles in that Titans game especially in our injury riddled secondary. I expect this to be a defensive game.
Random note:
I expect a lot of pump fakes from Sanchez that could open a few things up. Something tells me your coaches wont respect our pass rush and they’ll take advantage of the extra time in the pocket due to our anemic pass rush.

Has blackouts been a problem this year?

before the season, I read a lot about Jacksonville possibly suffering from black outs but not heard anything since. How well are you supported on gameday, have there been any black outs this season?

If you had to say your main area of weakness what would it be?

Which player is not talked about much that we should pay attention to this Sunday?

Weakness - that's easy - pass rush / pass defense

Player on D is a rookie – Terrance Knighton: weighs about 3 tons and is very powerful – has been a standout on the D line.

by OGN on Nov 9, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Blackout's have been bad

Hell, last Sunday we had 10,000 Chiefs fans come to town and we still couldn’t crack 50,000 attendance. The more I tell people San Diego and St.Louis are better candidates for LA, I wonder if I’m just trying to convince myself.

Pass Rush obviously, though maybe we found something against the Chiefs. Or the Chiefs are just that bad.

Instead of giving the obvious answer of Knighton, I’ll go with his defensive rookie counter part, CB Derek Cox. He’s super talented though still learning on the job. He does lead all rookies in INTs.

Sadly yes

But this year the ticketsales hit all time low. We are dangered species… If this not turning back in 2 years-say bye bye to Jacksonville

Weakest area-lack of pass rush and pass protection is bad. We had 5 sacks before the KC game-now we have 8 because Kansas is a bad team.

Not talked abou player: I give you 3: Terrance Knighton Rookie DT; Daryl Smith LB (he has 1.5 sack and a veeery good game) and on offense: rookie WR Mike Thomas-Watch out for him; if the Jags O can play.
Sleeper alert: Rashad Jennings Rookie RB. He starting to get the NFL rhythm-scored his 1st TD last week!!!

Since you anserwed my Questions, I'll do the same.

Blackouts are blackouts, it hurts our team in terms of pride and money. Its say to say we feel the sting whenever LA or London is mentioned. I think the fanbase is growing and will return when 3nd generation fans grow old enough to buy their own tickets along with a re-emergence of the Jaguars.

Our main weaknesses are multi-fauceted and changes weekly. Sometimes tackling is an issue, sometimes its our rookies learning their respective positions. For you guys i think pass blocking and play calls will be our weakness.

Unknown player to be on the look for: Well there’s a couple.

7th Rounder RB Rashad Jennings has one good run a game it seems: fast forward 13 seconds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnPQ37THIPM.

Mike Thomas our 5th Round WR/PR/KR has been giving us good starting spots. He hasn’t broke it long yet but he may. He also is a key component of our Option/Reverse trickery. He’s our Percy Harvin if you’ll excuse my Gators reference.

Watch

MJD. That may sound obvious. But here’s the twist. Watch him pass block. I seriously think he’s the best in the league in that role.
Our CB’s are players to watch. I believe both of them are improving, even Mathis the veteran. I believe someone should get their hands on the ball in the secondary. But you’ll will get your yards in the air off the PA.

Oh Geez, that question kills me

I’d hate to think what I’d do. Most Likely I’d still support the team but it’d be so hard. I don’t really care for the Falcons, or any NFC team for that matter. If i had to pick a team close to me to support then I guess it woould be the Dolphins, but it would never feel like true fandom. I would certainly be more hardcore Gator fan, and maybe spend more time in other sports like basketball or baseball.

I’m an NFL fan first type of person (which is a MAJOR part of the issue in JAX – not enough of us). JAX is my hometown and I was a charter season ticket holder until I moved away in 2000 – Jags still my team though and I’m diehard. I currently live in Raleigh NC with no plans on moving – I might still support the Jags but would seriously start to consider the Panthers since they’re only 3 hours away.

Probably the same as today Jack Del Rio and David Garrard

JDR singed a K extension last year for $20 Mil through 2012. I personally am in the 25 – 30% minority that think the Jags should find a new HC – his teams are very inconsistent, he cannot maintain success, and his divisional record blows dog – but that’s me. Given that the team is rebuilding and his “big money” K, I concede that he’ll more than likely be on the sidelines next year.

David – when he’s on, he can be extremely dangerous, when he’s not, he isn’t very good. The inconsistent line play does impact, but David is inconsistent in his own right. I also think we need to at least start grooming a replacement – he’s inconsistent and on the wrong side of 30.

David will let you know early if he’s going to have a good game or not. If things are going well (run game, line play, and he hits some early passes) he can catch fire. Also, look to see if he stands his ground to hit passes – if he does early, that’s a good sign for Jags. If things don’t go his way early, he’s not the type of QB that can “work his way out” of that as the game goes on. A major flaw in his game in my opinion.

by OGN on Nov 10, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

on why we will keep David

we simply have more pressing needs to address at this time – D line and secondary, We also need interior line.

by OGN on Nov 11, 2009 7:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If the Jaguars will win 3 more games

from the rest of the 8 games-Del Rio will be the coach next year too.

David must play the way he played last weekend more of the time. If the Jaguars didn’T MUST draft Tim Tebow (the local hero) from ticket sales issue; he will be the starting QB. Although I would see some Luke McCown around the end of the season; to know what can he do.
But no matter what happens: The Jaguars will most likely will draft a new (developing) QB next spring-the first since 2003 ands Byron Leftwich.

27-24, Josh Scobee 55-40 yard FG.

From what I gather, you guys are a hot and cold team, and to some extent so are we, just we are hot and cold in areas of the team, so one unit could decide not to show up. If I had to guess at a score I would say it would be a 20-17 type score.

however our special teams are usually quite good, and standard the rest. Rarely are they as bad as they were last Sunday. A lot of things contributed to that, but one of them was player selection, this fan post by NC Scott sums it up pretty well:

how do the jaguars fans feel about byron leftwich?

just curious.

how do you feel about him getting benched and eventually moving on?

are you happy with david garrard?

also, are you happy about the coaching staff?

Byron – We gave him all the time in the world to be good, and he wasn’t worth keeping because his below average in every aspect. He choked in the 2 minute drill situactions. Just Bad.

When he got benched it was good, because we were much better without him. All the players acted like he was great but we Fans dispised him and we’re happy he was gone.

David is good, he’s not totally in 2007 form, but he isn’t bad either. He’s as hot or cold as the team tho usually warm. We’d only draft a Qb because Garrard is over 30.

Our coaching staff is at least decent. We have many debates about Del Rio. Our Offensive Cord. is the best we’ve had in a while even though he’ll call a bad play once in a while. We dispise our D-Line coach. And we like pretty much everyone else.

IMO

Byron got off on such a bad foot with this town that he put himself behind the 8-ball from day one.

He starts off his career with the Jaguars as the longest holdout in team history. Never a good thing especially when you’re drafted to replace the face of the franchise (Mark Brunell.) Then he was handed the starting job thanks to Brunell’s injury and Brunell was unceremoniously cut the next off season.

That being said, it became increasingly clear Byron was never going to materialize into anything special. It was the right thing to bench him and start Garrard.

so it’s safe to safe jaguars fans don’t really miss him, huh?
i liked him because he went to marshal and chad pennington was good friends with him.

as for the coaching, apparently rex ryan is good friends with jack del rio, dating back to their days in baltimore:

"I really respect Jack," Ryan said. "We’re very similar. I think our teams are similar. Both teams like to run the football. Both teams are physical football teams. Both teams are 4-4. That’s obvious. Jack and I are similar. … Jack was a great player and he’s good-looking. Apparently, maybe we’re not that similar. Anyway, he’s a heck of a guy, just a real passionate coach. I know he’s going to have his team ready to go.

"I like the way he coaches football," Ryan added. "I admire the way he played football. Again, we’re good buddies, but we’re going to try to kill each other. That’s just the way it goes."

Yeah I read a crazy thing this week

from that Baltimore defensive coaching staff between 1999-2001 there are 4 current headcoaches in the NFL:

NAME POS. WITH RAVENS CURRENT POSITION
Jack Del Rio Linebackers Head coach, Jacksonville
Rex Ryan Defensive line Head coach, N.Y. Jets
Mike Smith Def. asst./Def. line Head coach, Atlanta
Marvin Lewis Defensive coordinator Head coach, Cincinnati

As far as Byron-I have no problem with him; he just can stayed heathy. He made a bad decesion with Tampa this year; Now he is a backup in a bad team; if he stays with the Steelers he might have a chance for another ring this year…
