Good evening, everybody

I threw this up a bit earlier than planned. David will be around in a bit, but if anybody wants to talk about the Jets or anything else (baseball, cookie recipes, love advice), we’ll be here.

Agreed.

McCarver kept bringing up the notion that he’d go to Seattle if he left NY, but I seem to remember hearing that he and Ichiro don’t exactly get along.

He would certainly go back to Japan a conquering hero.

This is certainly an interesting chat—a Jets fan and a Dolphins fan discussing the Yankees.

That's awesome.

Thoughts on Matt Ryan this year? I feel like he’s not quite living up to the expectations that I gave him in the preseason yet.

I was expecting maybe half a step back. He really snuck up on people last year. He was going to have a target on his back this year. Also his three losses were on the road to really good teams. I’ll tell you. That team couldn’t have a better leader on or off the field. I think he’ll be fine.

I was very impressed with him last season.

I owned Roddy in my fantasy league, so I watched every Falcon move with interest. I still sometimes wish Miami had taken him #1 overall.

Evident by the stats

2nd best defence overall going into the bye week. I think he has done a stand up job as a HC so far, couple of clock management issues, but generally not bad at all, can see that he is learning. Think he has a bright future ahead of him as a head coach. He is obviously a great personnel manager, the players love playing for him.

Not to mention the way he’s developed some of the more marginal players. Guys like Devito, Smith, and Pouha are playing significantly better than they had the rest of their careers. The only thing different this year is the coaching staff.

Pouha has been the most notable, we really struggled last year with Jenkins reeling but Pouha this year seems to have a lot more energy to him. The defence as a whole just seem like they know what they are supposed to be doing.

Alternatively he will learn to be more balanced

I don’t think it has caused so much havoc that he will be out of football or as a head coach. I think he will soon start to understand the intricacies of clock and team management and not just defensive management.

Question about Gang Green Nation:

Was this the last NFL SB Nation blog to be formed? I remember when I joined in early 2008 being confused as to why the Jets were absent from the discussions.

Great question

I’m not convinced it lowers his asking price. Remember, he’s a free agent so it will only take one team to make the bid he’s looking for to force the Jets to match. Plus I’ve read he’s expected to make a full recovery.

It may change

our move on Jones however. This off-season I remember everyone pretty much writing Jones off being back because of that roster bonus he is due next season ($3 million), however with questions about Leon and I really don’t think he will be back to full speed by the start of the season and Greene being raw, it’s more likely we bring Jones back IMO. Add to that the fact he doesn’t look like he is slowing down at all.

constantly throws around 20 passes and completes three. If they are that unhappy with Quinn then they need to go back to the draft for one or sign one through FA.

They were holding Quinn back for a number of weeks to ensure that he didn't log enough playing time to activate an $11 million bonus...

… but they’re passed that threshold. No sense in not giving him a chance now.

he plays off of confidence though, being a ND fan I got the chance to see him a lot, and I’m surprised at just how much he has struggled, but watching him with the Browns, you can see that his confidence is just not there.

I’ve been very impressed with Jimmy Clausen. He’s got all the physical tools, and he’s making good reads. Very impressive the way he’s checked down when teams drop into a deep zone and not force it to his playmakers. I think Clausen’s going to be a good pro.

Massive improvement on last year

That was the main issue last year, he always forced it and refused to check down to the backs and take the 5-6 yards that was on offer. This year that’s completely changed. Just look at the BC games from last year and this year. They play off the receivers so much, last year he tried forcing down field, this year, just getting it out quick, picking up 6 yards at a time. He should be the first QB taken, thinking that he is probably heading to the Rams. Hoping he doesn’t come out though. We have a genuine chance at a BCS next year, well talent wise. Need to get Weis out though.

One thing that wouldn’t surprise me is more teams going to the Miami model (bringing in a credible figure to run the operations even if he doesn’t want to put the time into coaching). Maybe Marty taking that role since he has a history with the Browns and hiring Brian to be the HC? Seems logical to me.

So little about that Mangini hire made sense. They didn’t even look at the other options, they hired a coach before a GM. Also, don’t you usually go for the opposite of the coach you just fired. They go for another New England DC.

To think, if they had resurrected their franchise a year earlier they would’ve landed Peyton instead of Tim Couch.

Rivers v Manning

That old debate is going to creep up again. Rivers threw a couple of INT today, but If I were starting a franchise and I had to pick one of them, I would go with Rivers over Manning.

The way he holds onto the ball has pros and cons. He probably takes more hits and sacks than he should, but the way he can break tackles on sacks also creates things other quarterbacks can’t.

Protect the football

Really needs to stop dangling the ball, if he can do that, then will be pretty happy. Also looking for him not to have another nightmare game. He will make mistakes, but really don’t want to see another 3+ INT, or just 3+ turnovers by any means. You see that Stafford threw 5 INT today, it happens to the best of them. What about you?

Agree completely

A dominant win against a Texans team that almost beat Indi on the road, and then a win against the 6-2 pats…but on the other side of the spectrum losing to the Bills and swept by the phins.

That Patriots/Saints game will be a good one

I was saying to a friend earlier that the Patriots don’t have that aura around them any more that if they get 2 games up they are unreachable. A couple of years ago, a 2 game lead with 7-8 to go would be pretty much game over, but not any-more IMO.

Steady run

He hasn’t been outstanding, and some nagging injuries are concerning me, however for the time he has been given he hasn’t been bad. He shows toughness, fights through tackles, but I don’t think he is ready to be a feature back just yet. Looking forward to seeing him with a few more carries, but want to see T.Jones back next year, and then let Greene take over. Liked him at Iowa, 1000+ yards after contact in 08, so he doesn’t go down easy.

Just having him on the field effects everything

teams have to prepare for him, and he really has a good motor like we saw on the 2nd sack against Oakland I think it was. I think it’s a combination of him and Rex’s schemes, we weren’t getting sacks before but we were getting to the QB’s, so it was only a matter of time.

He is especially dangerous when the run game is working, because his initial burst and quickness, if backs bite on the PA, they are getting burned. I’m sure before the season is through he would of made a couple of big plays for us

Not a fan of any team though, my team resides in the 3rd tier of English football. Norwich City. I think Chelsea probably win it this year, they seem like the complete team this season, United are missing Ronaldo, Liverpool are not defensively good enough. It’s the usual culprits for the title though, looking forward to the day when the Champ doesn’t come from United/Liverpool/Arsenal or Chelsea. You a fan of the beautiful game?

I’m getting into it a little. That’s why I asked. Saturday mornings when I wake up that’s usually all that’s on.

I’m still shopping for a team. It’s difficult because I don’t really want to be a big four bandwagoner, but I’ll need one big enough that will be on Fox Soccer Channel or ESPN 2 frequently. I wouldn’t root for United or Chelsea. I do enjoy Arsenal’s style of play, and You’ll Never Walk alone at Liverpool is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I’m still not sure what team I’ll end up supporting. The best advice I’ve ever gotten is that a team chooses you. You don’t choose a team.

If you try and just choose a team a lot of the time you will start watching and then another team jumps out at you. Not sure how they choose their teams to show, have you ever look at Tottenham, in my experience, they are usually pretty popular over in the US. Everton might be worth taking a look at, Aston Villa as well. Or-depends what you look for in a team, Arsenal play free flowing attacking football, but they have always had problems defensively under Wenger.

SPL is a boring two team league, you know it’s either Celtic or Rangers. If they do want to become prem teams, they will have to start at the bottom of the ladder. They won’t be allowed to just automatically go to the Prem, not sure where they will start, but thinking it is probably the conference.

I don’t see it ever happening however.

Quite Easily

NFl is the only sport that is showed on terrestial TV, meaning that you don’t have to pay for it. We get one game a week the SNF game (we used to get the MNF one as well, but not this season). Then on paid TV, we have SKY who show 3 games a week on a Sunday afternoon. We also have two channels dedicated to US sports, our version of ESPN and ESPNNA that show NHL/NBA/MLB and college sports, along with all the sports talk shows, like PTI/ATH, Sports reporters. Use internet links to get the games I want, pay for MLB.TV and Field pass for football.

He can be so valuable to this offence and with a rookie QB, having that safety net underneath is valuable. I think the defence as a unit are going to be fine, so getting the offence going is vital to give us chances to win the game.

On another note, I’ve enjoyed this. Should we make this a Sunday night ritual? I’d imagine we’ll start getting more traffic on game nights.

Probably a good idea

Sure it will be a lot busier next Sunday, especially with a win hopefully

I'll say Sione Pouha

If he can take double teams it’ll be huge for the linebackers to make plays, but if he gets pushed off the line it could be trouble.

by Jerrad p on Nov 8, 2009 9:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Very good choice

I think I’ll take the obvious guy, Sanchez. Needs to continue to develop and make less mistakes with the football.

Personally..

I dislike Miami even more than the Pats, but I was hoping for A dolphin win leaves us only 1 game behind the Pats..

by Jerrad p on Nov 8, 2009 9:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Similar opinion to most Jets fans I think

However the Patriots have a much tougher schedule than the Dolphins, so Patriots are more likely to drop games down the road IMO

Agreed

A very good idea, however, could be alot of venting if we lose or obnoxious fans from the other team.

by Jerrad p on Nov 8, 2009 9:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Other fans aren’t a problem. If we’re live, I can take care of anybody who acts up and prevent them from disrupting other threads.

Always expect some venting now and again

As long as we have some cool heads in here to keep perspective, we will be good

Very true

Just saying the conversation would be alot different than todays. This was more of a reflection on the whole season and various other topics, while next week would consist more of the Jacksonville game. But anyways im all for that idea.

by Jerrad p on Nov 8, 2009 9:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

We did something similar after the Miami game, and this Dolphins fan came on and compared me to Saddam Hussein….don’t think we’re gonna top that.

lol that was surreal

Usually it’s ok, and apart from a couple of issues with some Dolphins fans, the opposing teams fans have been pretty good this season.

I was disappointed more Bills fans didn’t come the week we played them. They stopped by over the summer when the AFC East blogs had some Q and A. They’re really astute fans. Brought a lot of good conversation to the table.

Yer it was a shame

Next time we play them, I’m going to make an effort to get over there and talk to some and bring some back over for discussion with our fans.

I think doing the Q&A midweek helps with that

I saw that actually.

Very funny, lightened the mood im sure…and forgot to mention another player who needs to step up, KERRY RHODES

I’ll throw Braylon Edwards in there. He needs to continue playing on a high level and earn his contract.

I know some Bill fans.

Pretty classy in their win, they were a bit shocked too.

Yeah, when I talked to Brian the Bills blogger that week, it seemed like he was talking about how the Jets would kill the Bills every other sentence.

Yes

He’s been very good this year. Hopefully, the line can stay healthy…And yeah I saw his prediction wasn’t giving them much hope…But on any given Sunday anything can happen.

Let’s see if Keller turned a corner last week also. It seemed like he was Sanchez’s primary read. Not sure whether that’s to avoid mistakes or because the Dolphins can’t cover tight ends.

A bit of both perhaps?

Yes, the Phins can’t cover tight ends, but his touchdown catch was an extremely difficult ball and made an unbelievable catch on the 4th down. ( pass int, but you get my point)

by Jerrad p on Nov 8, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It's one of the reasons I thought Keller was in for a massive season

He should be the primary read for a rookie QB IMO, and we kind of got away from that after Sanchez had so much success, but it seems that he is back to being the primary guy

One of the reasons I was surprised Leon wasn’t more involved in the passing game.

Yahoo Sports

A big time follower there, I saw your guys link and started reading, quite nice actually. I like the Site updated throughout the day which is cool. I enjoyed the 5 questions with the other team…don’t know if you guys have done that every week. Prefer that the most since I believe the fans really know their team the best. I doubt any other NFL fan knows who Mike Devito, Pouha, or Woodhead is.

Thanks for the input and the kind words. We should have a few things for Jaguars week. I’ll be on the Jacksonville blog’s podcast Wednesday night.

Agree on Keller

A tight end like Keller should be a great safety valve for a rookie qb… maybe his numbers have dropped because he was Favre’s favorite target and we all know he loves his tight end…and I will def. try to check that out John.

by Jerrad p on Nov 8, 2009 10:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

Look at the TE in Minnesota (Shiancoe??, not sure how you spell it), but he is having a great season. Favre always finds a way to get it to his TE, it will take time for a rookie to get up to pace. However I think the combination of Sanchez to Keller will be a good one for many years.
