Team-mates Take Shots At Rhodes

Here is a interesting look at one aspect of the Kerry Rhodes saga that we have not focused on here at GGN, and it comes courtesy of Jets Twit, an excellent blog by Erik Manassy that is dedicated to the New York Jets and social media and how they interact and connect.

Some will know that Kerry Rhodes has been invisible from twitter since it was announced that he would be benched in favour of Eric Smith this weekend. Well he today broke that silence and Jets Twit takes a look at what was said and asks some great questions.

One being what do you read into Rhodes comment in reply to a tweet by Erik?

And

What do you make of the players who took some shots at Kerry under condition of anonymity?

One of the comments made by a Jets player to a member of the media said that he was surprised it took this long for the Jets to bench Rhodes.

Personally I consider these players absolutely cowards, if you are going to make a comment, be man enough to put your name to it. You can't say that doing so would create a locker room divide, because imagine what it is like now, Kerry knowing that some player(s) have taken some shots at him, but not knowing whose those players were.

It's cheap, it's very disrespectful, and it is the last thing you want when you are trying to build team unity.

I have to say back when Rodney Harrison dissed Rhodes saying he always came up lame on big hits I got mad. Now I see he was right.Rhodes strength was always pass coverage but as stated in your other article he is giving up 70% of his passes.I think Ryan really wants to develop his own Ed Reed and he realizes that Rhodes is not it. I would not be surprised to see Rhodes gone in the off season. Then Ryan can draft someone he can mold.

Don't think a guy like Ed Reed can be developed, but...

Rhodes is definitely too passive be anywhere near that caliber of a player. I could deal with him being late to the ball if he lit somebody up once in a while. He never gets a pick, he never breaks up passes, and he never lays the wood. Really, what good is he?

At least if Smith is late to the ball he’s gonna destroy whoever has it when he arrives. Blow up a receiver early in a game, and they all start to get alligator arms.

Hey! That's our job

to criticize and call out Rhodes. lol. We’ve been doing it effectively since the Miami game, so just leave that job up to us (the bloggers/the media.)

Personally think while it may be cowardly to remain anonymous, it’s better than blatantly stating who made the statements, and tearing the locker room apart.

That being said, they shouldn’t have even have been made in the first place. Rhodes was benched, Smith’s going to start in his place, the message was sent to him. This just brings in more useless negativity.

And if we ship him in the offseason, great. I think he’s going to be gone also, we’ve been discussing it here on GGN for awhile.

It won't be long

A couple losses tops before Smith is sat back down and Rhodes is reinserted in the defensive fold. Rarely when you have a player who has hit the skids or is being scapegoated does the backup validate your feelings.

Rhodes is having a bad year after a year where his ineffectiveness was overstated. If you want a playmaking safety trade up in the first round for one. No matter how well safeties adjust from college ball there is going to be a lag where we kick ourselves for either giving him away low or relegating him to backup status.

No, he isn’t playing like he used to. He’s also being blamed for the defense, specifically the secondaries failures in-game. Incomplete teams frequently go for the throats of the perceived weakest link. It’s not even that he’s screwing up more than Sanchez or any other individual player, it’s just Dirty Mark doesn’t have a show or contribute to the Yahoo! blog. Rhodes may be just one of those K. Johnson average players that make better analysts.

Like you I can’t help but think if things would be any different if Leonard or Abe Elam were dropped into the Strong slot and shipping Rhodes instead. Then again Rhodes may very well validate everything I say when he tears it up for another secondary after we sell him low this offseason.
