Future for Braylon?
I ask Jet fans, do you think we should sign Braylon Edwards in the offseason?
We know hes a number 1 on any team and is an impact player if he hangs on to the ball. He is also gonna want BIG money.
I believe we have two number ones in Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery. In my perfect world, we would not persue Braylon and draft a wideout fairly high to compliment Jerricho. Some people i talk to think it might leave the team thin at WR again (the beginning of the season). JC has battled injuries all year and is still putting up numbers in every game hes been in. I remember when he was coming up under Coles and hes that guy now.
Whats your thoughts?

Good question JC, and it would be interesting to see what people think about this. Without doubt he is a number one guy and will want to be paid as such. Which will likely mean a salary around $8-$10 million. Now you have to ask if the position requires that much money, a few weeks ago I’m sure it would of been a universal yes, but his performances have dropped lately. However how many times does a player like that come around, it’s hard to translate a WR from NCAA to the NFL, so if you have a top talent at the receiver position then you should probably hang onto him. As Sanchez progresses, so will the performance of Edwards, and he is still learning the offence.
I would probably prefer that we pursued him as long as his demands are reasonable for his production. There are a couple of wide receiver in the draft that would interest me, as an ND guy, would take Golden Tate without a doubt. However I think we have too many pressing needs to go to the receiver position early in the draft.
Personally let’s get him signed up.

Personally let’s get him signed up.
I agree. I like Tate and I also like Dez Bryant, who I think is going to be a beast, and I also don’t care about the fact that he did nothing wrong and was deemed ineligible for it. That said, I still want Braylon back.

I wonder if Braylon's position would change
if we traded Kerry Rhodes. I know they are good buddies, and I know it’s unlikely that we trade Rhodes thanks to the contract.. He has said he wants to be here, but we are not exactly in the best cap situation right now. This is going to be a very interesting off-season with the Jones roster bonus, Leon re-signing and the Braylon situation.

Jones roster bonus?

Jones is owed $3 million in 2010
He has a base salary of $2.8 million with the $3 million on top. Before the season many thought that he may well of been cut so we wouldn’t have to pay the bonus, but now with Leon’s injury and Greene not getting half as many carries as some thought and Jones season performance so far, it seems it has completely turned around. Before we may not of been able to afford the bonus, now it seems we can’t afford to not pay him.

I still say we cut him.
He is getting old, and I know the stats are there, but I think there are a lot of good RB’s who can put up numbers with the Jets line. Jones is slowing down (though admittedly, not on the stat sheet), and I think Greene should get looked at in these last few weeks to see whats up with him. I like Jones, I just don’t want to pay him that money. Cut him loose, and move forward. Thanks for the contributions TJ.

I was only a little concerned about age
at some point he is going to have to slow down, although he is in great shape, and he seems to have a fantastic work ethic, so maybe he will be able to maintain his performance for longer.

Time to look elsewhere?
I think the Jets should look past Braylon, and pick up a free agent, and draft someone. Braylon is a big play reciever, but his case of the drops is too big to overlook. And they need to spend some money on Leon and TJ (potentially)
If they went on the free agent market on the cheaper end, we could take a look at Chris Chambers, a very dependable 2. Or go into the arms hunt, and try to nab someone like Vincent Jackson. I think size is the important thing to look for, the Jets have struggled to find a speedy big receiver since Keyshawn (ugh i feel a little sick when i say his name)
The draft is really deep at receiver, and more importantly, where the Jets will probably be slotted, they could easily pick up a TALL receiver, who isn’t raw (like Marcus Henry in the past). Like Danario Alexander out of Missouri (6-5) or Brandon LaFell (6-3). The rest of the “star” receivers in the draft, just won’t add enough size for a Second year Quarterback. Or… if they just want familiarity go pickup Damian Williams, who is small (6-1) but will bring a face Sanchez is used to throwing to.

I'll take Braylon over Leon on in a second.
I love Leon, but he is all over. Jamaal Charles, Steve Slaton, Reggie Bush, Darren Sproles, Bernard Scott, Fred Jackson, Kevin Faulk, LeSean McCoy, Tim Hightower, Justin Forsett, Darren McFadden, Tashard Choice, Ahmad Bradshaw, Rock Cartwright, etc, etc. I don’t mean to hate on Leon, but there are lots of small explosive playmaking running backs every year available in the draft in the 3rd round. That’s how we got Leon in the first place. If I had it my way, I would cut TJ, resign Leon and Braylon, and try to get a big back in the mold of Lendale White or Beanie Wells or somebody like that. A big powerful bruiser. But if I have to pick one guy, Leon or Braylon, I’m taking the 6’4 guy with speed and absurd leaping ability, the guy who can stretch the field and is a threat on every single play. This dude is still so young. He can do things that just a handful of other WR’s in the NFL can do.

And did you just call Keyshawn speedy?
Why would you want to let Braylon walk, and then try to draft a guy that you hope will eventually turn out to be Braylon?

Although to be fair,
you brought up a name that I love, Vincent Jackson. I think he is as good as any receiver in the league at getting deep. He is a bomb deep threat. But my point is, if you want size and speed, we have it. We have a 26 year old WR that is 2 years removed from a 1300 yd 16 TD season. That wasn’t an accident. It happened to be the only season he played in the NFL where he had a productive QB? Coincidence? I think not. He has one key drop, the 2 pt conversion drop that was mostly Sanchez fault. He has about 2 full seconds to hit Edwards wide open and he waited, lead him into 2 guys and a big hit. Should he have held it, yeah. Should we get rid of a guy that is as talented as any player that plays the position in this league because of it? F*ck all that. Yeah, I know he dropped a ball vs the Pats. Whoopty doo, it happens. Cotchery/Edwards/Keller gives us a legit 3 man receiving team. Have you not noticed Kellers production since Edwards and Cotchery have finally been on the field together? Let Sanchez have an offseason to grow with this core of guys, the defense an offseason to gel more and get more comfortable with this playbook, and Rex Ryan an offseason to progress as a head coach, sprinkle in a nice draft and a couple of good free agent pickups(not necesarrily money moves, just shred little pickups), and come next year this team may be the contender we though they were 2 months ago.

Agreed
How long have we been looking for that speedy, tall receiver, we finally have him in Edwards and his best years are right around the corner. I think the logical way to go is just keep him for the qualifying offer and then address the situation next off-season. There really is no need to commit $20 in guarantees this off-season, we can’t really afford that.

Agree --- Braylon should go
Yes -- he has talent but I’m not sure about his heart. The Jets are not desperate -- they can tap into alternatives -— particularly because Edwards is not even close to being a surefire #1 WR. If he had demonstrated this elsewhere or even in his short stay on the Jets I’d be more inclined to consider paying him to be their #1 WR for the next few years. Right now, though, I only see potential rather than a proven track record.

Alternative
With Braylon being a restricted free agent after the season we can retain him for 2010 for the league mandated qualifying offer of $5 million and then address the long term prospects post the 2010 season. Not only will this give us more time to evaluate his potential, but it will also give us time to see just how well he gels with Mark Sanchez. When asked about being extended for a year Edwards said
“If these guys want to extend me to play here, I’d love to be there,” he said.
That seems like the most cost effective, logical route for the Jets with all things considered, particularly financial situations.

Agreed
Bringing him back in as a one year qualifier would workout pretty well, still give them the flexibility to hunt, while not leaving a big hole if nothing works out, or if someone gets hurt. Hopefully the jets won’t hold Leon’s contract ransom (since he is a RFA with an uncapped year).
Oh yeah, and we are about to be uncapped aren’t we, so I guess his costs wouldn’t effect the jets 2010 season much either way.

I really don't see either Braylon or Jerricho as true #1s...
that being said I would like to see them keep him the only better option in free agency this off season will be Marshall, they should go all out after Marshall, but if they can’t sign him, do not let Edwards get away.
