Rex Ryan Cries During Team Meeting

From Sporting News/Yahoo Sports:

Yeah, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan shed tears in front of his players. You wanna make something of it?

The New York Daily News does, giving us this account of Ryan’s past few days:

Three days before the Jacksonville game, Ryan was all confidence, telling the Daily News the Jets would make the playoffs. On the eve of the game, he lashed into the team with his no-more-excuses speech. On Monday, he parted ways with his defensive-line coach, told reporters he accepted blame for the defensive meltdown and closed his team meeting with tears.

"Surreal," is how Jets safety Kerry Rhodes(notes) described the situation to the newspaper:"It’s like seeing your dad cry. You never think you’ll see that … but to see it was surreal. To know that he takes it that much to heart, us losing and us trying to be a winner, it makes you want to keep going."

Former Ravens defensive tackle Tony Siragusa says he has seen Ryan tear up before and it’s nothing to worry about.

"Rex is an emotional guy. When a coach doesn’t give a (darn) - and I’ve been around coaches like that - that’s when you should worry. Rex, this is his life. A lot of us have a lot of things going on in our lives. Rex, he has a nice family, but ever since he’s been a little kid, football has been in his blood."

Trenches would like to remind you of several other coaches known for occasional waterworks: Bill Cowher, Dick Vermeil, Gunther Cunningham.

Star-divide

I've seen the video of him "crying" after the Houston win.  He just got emotional and shed tears.  He wasn't like bawling or anything.

I haven't seen any video of him "crying" during the team meeting, and so far none of the reporters have.  So it seems to me that Rex is just an emotional guy and this whole situation could be a little overblown.

Nonetheless, you can't deny that the man cares about his team and about winning.

Tony Siragusa said it best

He obviously cares so much about this team, and after a loss, trying to give a speech to motivate, tension got to him, was probably just a few tears. I don’t get the people saying that it’s weakness, it’s not weakness at all, seeing him like that will surely add to the motivation for the weekend.

Didn’t Dick Vermeil and Bill Cowher cry out of joy? This seems like poor Rexy isn’t happy and he doesn’t “wike woooosing”.

Rex jokes about it on Wednesday's conference.

From Randy Lange:

Rex said, “I got a new sponsor … for obvious reasons.”

And with that the Jets head coach plunked a box of Kleenexes on his podium in the media room at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center.

“I understand everything gets out, and sometimes you say things to your team and you don’t realize everyone will find out. That’s fine and dandy,” Ryan said. “One thing I’ll say is I’m going to be true to myself, and I said that from day one. If I don’t fit the stereotype of coachspeak or anything else, so be it. I’m always going to be myself.”

Pretty funny.

Then he brings out a prepared statement a la Mark Sanchez and reads it.

hehe

The statement was, “New England’s pretty good.”

Then he looks at the reporters.

“Any questions?”

I cried after leaving the Lands on Sunday, after the Jets probably pissed their season away losing to yet another garbage team.

Does that count?

I don't think he really cares

like he said, he is man enough to be himself and he is an emotional guy. Their is more than enough crying in football, but your right, there is no crying in baseball lol

Vermeil

If you cry and win the Super Bowl that is charming to most, but if you cry and your team is 4-5, well that may not be looked upon to favorably. But as a few have said, he probably doesn’t care, so why should we?
