Ryan Not Ready For Prime Time ......
I'll give Ryan credit for his talent and skill as a defensive coordinator. He clearly is very good ....... maybe superior ..... in his ability to put together a first-rate defense in the NFL. As to his ability to excel as a head coach ....... I think the jury is definitely out in this area. Ryan is growing increasingly suspect in his ability to exercise good judgement as a head coach ....... not only in his game-day decisions but also in his inarticulate ways of communicating to the press (and no doubt to his players as well).
The more one sees (and hears) Ryan, the less convincing he is in his attempt to be a head coach of an NFL team. His preparations for games are suspect and his game-day decisions are even more suspect. It's too bad that Woody is probably even more incompetent than Ryan because he (Woody) probably doesn't have a clue whatsoever that he made a bad decision in hiring Ryan. The Jets should cut their losses at the end of the season ........ declare this season a mistake and go after a real head coach.

Is the Dumbest thing I’ve heard yet this season.
I mean where to start? You don’t fire a first year head coach unless he really screws up a team in that year. Hell, we gave Kotite a second year.
I have the feeling that if the Jets had started 0-4 and had been competitive, you wouldn’t care about them losing now. But because they started 4-0 you expected a team with a rookie head coach and rookie QB to make the Super Bowl.
The Jets have had a revolving door at Coach for as long as I’ve been watching. Lets give Ryan the time to do what he’s going to do. Its silly to already be talking like your going to fire him.

I believe you started 3-0
and let’s not forget that you are 1-4 in the last 5 games. That is a nice trend.

ryan wasnt the problem with this game. he was perhaps the reason they borderline dominated on offense and defense. is it his fault ted ginn jr had a field day on kickoffs? is it his fault greene fumbled and taylor ran it back? rex ryans score was 27-9 today. dumb mistakes and misques from the players accounted for the other 21 points.

I agree 100%.
He is just going to drag your organization even lower with his cancerous attitude and demeanor.

Maybe Woody should go after
Tom Cable. He is a perfect fit for the jets.

For once I agree with some Jets fans here
Since being a Fins fan for about 40 years I haven’t really liked the Jets (though I’m from NY…my brother is a Jets fan, late dad a Giants fan), but with Ryan and the others showing such lousy ability to communicate as sportsmen, I have lost all respect for the Jets, and will continue to do so as long as Ryan is coach. Bart Scott would never have said what he’s been saying unless Ryan was his HC. And dont’ give me whatever about Joey Porter…I know he’s a loudmouth as well, and wish he’d keep his trap shut most of the time too. What he said about “icepack” on Sanchez wasn’t any better than Pace’s comment on “hurting” Henne (or whoever said it).

My Take as a Phins fan..
The Jets outplayed the Dolphins yesterday in almost every aspect of the game. They should’ve won the game. Even with the 2 miracle plays by Ted Ginn Jr., they were always in it right up until the very last. The Jets are better than even you guys think they are. I’ll happily take the W and the Sweep this year, but the Jets are good, and they’re going to be force next year (maybe still even this year). You have a lot of new faces, and they need time to gel—but the raw talent is definitely there. I hate Rex Ryan, and his big fat mouth—but that’s because I’m a Dolphins fan. I love when these two teams play—regardless of record, it’s always a war…and there’s nothing better than a great game. I was there yesterday, and my voice is gone. Until next time Jets fans, but as far as being sick to my stomach over yesterdays game—better you than me.

Absolutely not
People are way to quick to judge around here, and the Phins fans just don’t like him because he has been pretty blunt and doesn’t give credit where it is due. The guy is 8 games into his career as a head coach, and we are a .500 team this year. The 3-0 start gave people false hope. No offence intended snorky and I honestly mean that, but I’m sure nobody cares if Phins fans don’t respect the Jets. Ryan will be a good head coach, were 4-4 because of him, without him we are probably not even that. So calm the expectations, if we finish 8-8 on the season, that’s a success. I think mroelser but i best, of course Phins fans are going to hate Rex, he is brash, lound mouthed and cocky and right now he hasn’t justified it, but jumping on him 8 games into his tenure. A lot of fans want to talk about the ‘same old Jets’ but this is a case of ‘same old Jets fans’ give the guy a chance, he is learning n the job with a new QB, facing two massive season ending injuries. He will imrpove his way with the media, he will improve his game time decisions. Bill Belli went 5-11 in his first season as a head coach. Give Rex time, the fact that people are already questioning his ability is completely ridiculous IMO.

My point was ....
not that Ryan is not a very competent defensive mind. In a way …… like his father, he excels at that niche. My fear is that (like his father) …… he may not have what it takes to make the transition from being a leading defensive coordinator to an effective head coach. The bluster, ridiculous statements and, more problematic, making head coaching decisions based on his approach as a defensive guy is not, in my opinion, going to be a long-term winner for the Jets. His impact on the defense this year is impressive and that is what has improved this team. I’m just not convinced that he has the skill set to the type of sound coaching decisions across the board that are needed for a head coach to be successful.

Ok, but my point was
We can’t judge the long term prospects of a man based on his first 8 weeks in charge. Yes he has made some puzzling decisions, some bad comments but he is learning just like anyone who moves into a new situation. The decisions were rookie mistakes that he will learn from, and in time it’s likely he will be an effective head coach, because right now he isn’t doing a bad job of it and it’s still early. Rex wasn’t the reason we lost yesterday, but he was the reason we won against the Patriots IMO. He needs to learn and the only way he can do that is by learning on the job, nobody said it was going to be 100% right, right at the start, like the cliche goes, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’. Being 4-4 in his first year with a rookie QB is a good start to his career as a head coach, it seems worse than it is because we are 1-4 over the past 5 weeks. Problems were always going to arise, it was a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’. I don’t think you can judge a HC until after his 2nd year in charge of a team and even that might be too early. What we need more than anything is stability, we have had 4 head coaches since 2000. Let’s give the guy a chance.

Your comment makes no sense Jeff I
My fear is that (like his father) …… he may not have what it takes to make the transition from being a leading defensive coordinator to an effective head coach.
Buddy took over a team that was 18-29 under Marion Campbell and built one of the better teams in the NFL, a team that went to the playoffs the last three season that Buddy was there. Nobody looked forward to playing Buddy’s Eagles a few years into his tenure there.
He did that largely by drafting a bunch of Pro Bowlers and by coaching them into a physically and mentally tough football team. Yes they went 0-3 in the playoffs but that is not that unsual. Guys like Bill Cowher lost their first two playoff games. Many successful HC’s struggle early on in the playoffs.

Fair enough .... good points
I agree with many of the points you make. In all honesty, they probably do argue for giving him some time to work through. The Jets are clearly a better team this year …… in part because of the acquisitions but also, as I said, because Ryan is responsible for significantly improving their defense. I think the Jets have a decent shot at a 9-7 (or at least 8-8) record. If we can build on that for next year, I’ll be satisfied but I think we’ll need to keep an eye on Ryan and start to formulate some assessment after his second year.
Thanks for your comments.

No problem Jeff
I just don’t want people judging too early. In 2000 when Bill Bellichick took the Patriots to a 5-11 record in his first season losing twice to the Jets and twice to the Dolphins, people were talking about whether he had the right characteristics to be a head coach. They lost to some bad teams, the 3-13 Browns, the 5-11 Bears for example, and many questioned him but the patience that the Patriots showed in him paid of in the long run. Ryan is still sculpting this team, and still sculpting the defence, two drafts and two free agency periods , two seasons, that’s where you start seeing what the coach has.

Disagree 100%
Rex Ryan has coached this defense up to the point that you almost won a game where your QB threw, if i remember correctly, 5 picks…. 5! Statistically speaking, 5 interceptions should put your team waaay out of the game. Also Rex Ryan worked closely with Ozzie Newsome (the Ravens GM) in scouting all the defensive talent the Ravens have and i guarantee you this team finds a few studs on defense in the coming years. Yesterday’s loss is NOT Ryan’s fault. Throw whoever your special teams coach is under the bus. I also have to say that having a coach that your players will play hard for is invaluable, makes a huge difference in the whole psyche of the team and is definitely the difference between a few Ws and Ls. Braylon Edwards’s TD catch yesterday is a perfect example. The right way to work towards building a stable, winning franchise isn’t to throw your QB or your coach under the bus after a few losses. Here in NY we’re way too spoiled and impatient. The Giants are struggling right now because of our awful backup safeties and Eli’s plantar fascitis (just watched the tape… he isnt stepping into throws at all. convinced thats the problem right now), but we had a coach and QB who the media and fans ripped on mercilessly, calling for their heads. But given time to develop, this team made the playoffs every year from ‘05 till last year, won two division championships, 1 12-4 record as the top seed in the NFC, and a Super Bowl championship. I hate the Eagles, but they’re a good example too. Despite Eagle fans calling for both their heads alot of different times, the team stuck with McNabb and Andy Reid. They still do things that make no sense. Andy Reid called 13 run plays against the Raiders, even though they have one of the best RBs in the game in brian westbrook… and obviously lost. Last year they tied the Bengals, got blown out by the Ravens, and their QB admitted to the media that he didn’t know ties existed. There’s been more before that. But the stability of the coaching staff and of the front office has kept them in contention every year and they’ve played in 5 NFC championships and a super bowl. So, stick with the guy, ride the highs and lows, and good things will happen.
