Can someone explain to me why did not resign Edwards?
Ok, i get the whole CBA restricted free agent versus unrestricted free agent bit (or at least it is still up in the air)... and I also get that Leon Washington is in the same boat as Braylon Edwards, and if either of the two deserve a new deal, its Leon... But I would love for someone to explain to me how we expect this to play out at the end of the year.. do the Jets just offer Leon and Braylon new contracts, or are they going to be testing the open markets, and will we have first right of refusal...
I dont want to doubt Tannenbaum, but we did make some strange off season moves, like letting Coles go instead of trading him, not resigning Baker, cutting and resigning Brandon Moore, cutting Chad Pennington instead of trading him (that might have been a cap issue), not to mention what went down with Pete Kendall a few years back.
The reason I ask is this: if Braylon sucks, he'll get cut and move onto another team as a #2 or whatever. If he's great, we'll get hosed or potentially not be able to resign him. And then we are where we started today, but minus 2 players and 2 draft picks....
Just want to know whether or not an Edwards jersey will be keeping my Brett Favre jersey company in my closet next season.

I think I can address some of your questions
Tannenbaum has been on the money with most things. While I loved Coles before he was a Redskin, I didnt care too much for his second stint. As much as every one says Cotchery isn’t a number 1, he has been the Jets number 1 the past few seasons. Watching Coles on the Bengals, made me happier to have Stuckey as our number 2. As far as Chad goes, they had to cut salary immediately for Favre to fit under the cap, and I think with they felt about Chad, they felt they owed him a release instead of trading him somewhere he might not have been a starter. There’s no need to resign Edwards yet, there is almost no way the salary cap issues will be solved before the off season which means they are in control.

Giving a guy money before he’s actually done anything for the team is kinda silly. Especially when he’s been in a notorious slump. Could the Jets get him cheaper now? Sure. But why give a guy a contract if you don’t know how well he is going to perform on the team?
If he plays good (I’m not expecting ‘07) he’ll be a target for resigning with the team. You never know, the teams performance with him on the roster may work to their advantage in signing him after the season if it is a successful one.

True, but...

True, but “sign and trade” or “trade and re-sign” are pretty common throughout sports.
My guess is the Jets may have told him that this is a football team first, and a job second, and that if he plays team first, he’ll get his $$, and if he doesn’t, it’ll be a tough road.. Cause he sounded pretty coached during the press conference yesterday as far as “i’ll be blocking and drawing coverage” which is certainly team-first mentality.
But I still think if you trade off 2 players and 2 picks, for the 3rd pick of a draft (from a few years ago) you might want to try to lock him in for more than 12 games. And aside from the guaranteed money, player contracts are worth less than the paper they are drafted on.. its easy to cut a guy in the middle of a contract, or trade him, or whatever.
Last thought: I hope that Rex Ryan’s name starts to float around the NFL as a players coach that gets the job done, fun to play for, great guy, and we start to get veterans FAs looking to the Jets, even at a lesser paycheck to come play here.. Kris Jenkins basically said he never wants to play for another coach than Ryan, so……

That's why the franchise tag exists
If he has a breakthrough year and we want to keep him it’s not like we can’t. I think making him earn his next contract is a great idea. Although we if he winds up being great we’ll wish we bought low with his contract too.

True, but
if he signed now and he played great, how long until he would hold out for more money again? I just hope he plays well, then you give him his money. I really am excited about this though.

Hey Scott
According to the Rules of the CBA …If there is no cap this coming season.. Braylon and Leon would both be Restricted Free Agents Meaning They dont really hit the open Market The Jets make the first offer. And teams would have to Match and the Jets would get Draft Pick compensation if he did sign with another Team. Thus making it cheaper to sign him in that instance than to sign Them now.

Interesting...
Thanks for the info…
I just looked up RFA on wikipedia, and it mentions that if you make a qualifying offer of $2.56M a year and the player signs with another team, that team needs to compensate with a 1st and 3rd rounder. Braylon would almost certainly be above this $ amount, so I guess the Jets can see if they can “upgrade” their 3rd and 5th round picks (which went to Cleveland) to a 1st and 3rd rounder, and if not, get to keep Braylon for 4-5 years. I think getting a 1st and 3rd means you traded 2 players (Stuckey and Trusnik) and a 5th rounder for a 1st round pick, which can be used to acquire a franchise WR if we are unable to find another in free agency.
i dont see any teams willing to give up a 1st and 3rd for Braylon. If they were, he would have been traded there long before we got him. So I guess as a RFA he isnt going anywhere…
Leon might be another story!

comment about the edwards jersey hangin next to favre. I have been a Jets fan for my entire life and if i have learned one thing it is to never buy a jersey. If i had bought one every time i was enticed i would have the following in my closet: Blair Thomas, Esiason, Neagle, O’Donnell, Foley, Johnson, John Abraham, Victor Green, Becht, Lamont Jordan, Law, and yes Favre. So dont waste your money kid.

Haha.. thanks. Too late on that one.. But when a ticket to a game costs like $150 and you can get a jersey for $80, its really not that big of a deal. Since I live outside of NY now, I don’t mind picking up some Jets gear each year since I’m not paying for tickets. But at least my Keyshawn Johnson jersey has some company now. And I used to have another jersey, and I have no idea whose it was (maybe Glenn Foley), that my wife cut up to make our dog a Jets jersey in 2003.

The Favre jersey is currently sitting in my goodwill pile, so it’ll find a new home with someone who doesn’t know any better. Oh, I also have a Sanchez jersey, but so far so good.
