Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

I would like to get John B's (and other NY fans) opinions on Pace's words after the game

Calvin Pace came out after the game and said the following:

Afterward, linebacker Calvin Pace, who returned from a four-game suspension, was angry. Pace called Henne a “second-year clown quarterback,” saying “you have to give him credit, but our defense lost the game today.”

Pace added: “I’m going to be honest. I can’t respect that stuff, all that Wildcat. Because we’re in the N.F.L., man.” He called the Wildcat “nonsense”

Do you support his opinion on this? Or maybe the way he said it? I have been really respectful over there the last few days and although I have been attacked a few times, for the most part most of you have been kool to chat with here. Last night durring the game I was chatting a bit on your game thread and had a good time there. So this is not to attack any of you.. just looking for honest opinions on Calvin Pace's comments.

I personally believe he is out of line. I know he must be pissy or whatnot.. but to blame the loss on the idea that the wildcat shouldnt be allowed in the NFL ??  Cmon Pace.. is a formation. Some teams have been able to stop it. I imagine years ago when 90% of the plays were running plays that some people got pissy when QB's started chucking it down field too. Does that mean  that we shouldnt allow passing? Cmon Pace suck it up ya lost, all teams lose some games. Hell the Phins are only 2-3 this year. Im sure next time we meet up in NY Ryan will have a better game plan for the WC formation as he will plan a little better for it.

Anyways.. again thoughts on Pace's comments?  And again.. great game guys it was a good one!

Tough game for Pace

I think hes probably just pissed he nor the D had a very good game and was just shooting at the mouth at an emotional time. Jets D looked frustated and after slaming helmets all game, words are nothing at that point.

bart scott

after the game he also said something along the lines of “to me, it’s still a gimmick offense”

i don’t think they gave the wildcat enough respect, and that may be part of why they lost.

frankly, i think the jets d was a little overconfident

and the home of the... JETS!!!

I'll be honest

Pace to me has always been an over rated player, so his words dont matter much to me….regardless it still comes down to meeting head up with the guys blocking and Pace and the Jets D couldnt handle it…I dont blame them, we (Miami) might end up with two 1000 yard backs, our running game is that good…

I don’t know if Henne is a “clown” quarterback, but I do wonder if he looked so great because the Jets D didn’t show up last night. His arm is certainly better than Chad Pennington’s.

As for the Wildcat, what can you do?

OR...

the Jets defense was the same as it always is this season, but the Dolphins have the better offense. It’s always them beating themselves, never getting beat by a better team. You can wonder that all you want, Grady90, but we beat the Jets, the Jets didn’t beat themselves.

I give the Dolphins a ton of credit, but they in no way have a better offense than the Pats or Saints.

Wildcat is definitely a gimmick

Whether you like it or not, Fins fans, its just a gimmick. The reason it works is because it throws a hitch in the practice plans for that week. If every team in the league worked on it, as it happened last year, it would start to be less and less effective.

by Branta on Oct 13, 2009 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

But

It’s been around for a full season and offseason and the jets have faced it once last year. Also, it’s the same damn 4-5 plays that they run out of it, I mean, if it was a gimmick to trick people to going the wrong direction teams would’ve figured out how to stop it. But, it’s just blocking and running the ball, there is no quick fix d for it, you have to beat the man in front of you and make the tackle and no one has done that this year.

And you are pretty pathetic with this post

Its a formation. Simple. Nothing different in general then 5 wide or 4 wide or wildcat. Its a FORMATION. Gimmick plays are flea flickers.. multi laterals in hopes to win a game by fluke. The wildcat is not a fluke.

The Jets, as well as ALL NFL teams have had a year to figure the WC out. And its not its “gimmick” status that makes it work. Also.. in saying its a gimmick play then you just pretty much said your team got owned by a gimmick play that can be stopped easily. Thats not much faith in your defense or your team. The WC is a formation and it is here to stay. Either suck it up and learn to defend it or just sit back and lose all future games to it.

Also.. didnt you team try to run this “gimmick” play as well? Im sure if the jets gained 100+ yards out of the Semonial (or whatever its called in NY) then you wouldnt be calling it a gimmick play.

Whether you like it or not, Fins fans, its just a gimmick

lets examine the word “Gimmick” shall we?

Gimmick – A device employed to cheat, deceive, or trick.

I don’t see where we were cheating, deceiving, or tricking.

A) If we were in a illegal formation or we would get a flag.

B) We weren’ttrying to deceive or trick you at all.

Actually we were telling you what we were gonna do. We’re saying, hey our QB isn’t on the field, we are gonna run this ball. Stop us.

Yes I know I’m going a lil overboard with this, but so did Pace. The fact of the matter is, he got his feelings hurt because unlike being in a regular formation and not knowing if we were gonna run or pass, we were in the WC formation, knew what we were gonna do and still couldn’t stop us.

Which you couldn't stop

All this talk about the Wildcat being a gimmick. Last year, sure, it was a gimmick. Mainly because we lacked the personnel to successfully run out of the base formation and because like it or not the opponents weren’t expecting it. So sure, call it a gimmick or a fluke. But hell, this year, we are not only running wild out of the base formation but we are talking the Wildcat to a whole new level. If you are an Xs and Os person or not it doesn’t matter, anyone with any sense of intelligence can see that it is a simple formation were you tell the other team "im going to run right up your gut and I don’t care if you know it". To me, the wildcat is what football is all about; Blocking, running, and being tough. All areas in which we are extremely successful. There was a moment in the 3rd quarter where we ran the wildcat 3 straight times for 20 yards on the ground. Don’t tell me they as a defense didn’t see that coming. We just blocked and ran better than they blocked and tackled. And that is football 101, no gimmick. That’s what makes me mad. This clown is talking about it as if we had some kind of unfair advantage or edge because he couldn’t do his job. Wildcat or not, we were successful running the ball last night because our O-line and Running Backs were far superior than their full-of-thugs defense. Don’t tell me Ricky jumping over a defenders head to go for 3 yards and get the 1st down on the 5 yard line is a product of the "wildcat". We were better than them and period.

Wildcat is bullshit in much the same way any other trick plays (like a fake punt, fake FG, fake spike and throw to the endzone, or multiple laterals) are bullshit. They happen. They’re permitted. They’re embarrassing if you’re not defending them properly, but they are also not a main staple of the game. Teams need to learn to defend against it if they want to remain relevant.

On the other hand, one team does not own the exclusive rights to the Wildcat, and so by popularizing it in the NFL, they must also make sure their defense is capable of stopping it. Running it on offense does not mean you will not get victimized on defense at the hands of your opponent running the same play.

I think Miami has a clear advanage in the wildcat with an aggressive O-Line and incredible depth in the RB or QB/RB position. But over the course of a year or two, other teams will draft gimmicky players to fit the wildcat, and then it will just be another skill position for another offense formation.

I disagree with Pace’s comments on the Wildcat, and Henne did make some excellent throws so I do give his respect for that. However, I do agree with his disappointment in losing a close one.

it's not a gimmick

As said above, it’s telling defenses what the team is going to do. 1 vs. 1 running and blocking. Successful teams do well in it because their players are BETTER. No trickery involved. Suck it up.

Ronnie Brown is my hero.

hold on a second skippy

just to be clear, your team DOES run a version of the WC, and I believe it is called “Seminole”. The ran it last night and got stuffed.

Secondly, “trick plays”, as you describe them, work because they fool the other team… they surprise the other team… a la “fake”. The Jets caught the Fins on two “trick plays” last night… fake punts. They worked because you rarely see it, and it caught the STs punt return team off guard.

However, the WC is a formation. You can call it a gimmick, trick, whatever, but an opposing Defense knows EXACTLY what is being run, by the formation, BEFORE the snap. No "fakes, no “surprises”, just power football. It isn’t even as “tricky” as when the QB is still in the backfield and the snap is direct to the RB.

There is, flat out, NO EXCUSE for not being able to defend the WC formation, other than you are just getting beat at the LoS.

As is the rule… as has ALWAYS been the rule in the NFL… if you don’t like it, stop it.

Calling it a “gimmick” or a “trick” is the result of a poor understanding of the fundamentals of American Football.

I think a lot of Pace’s comments were made in the heat of the moment right after a painful loss. Perhaps he wouldn’t have made those comments if asked this afternoon.

I’ve written this elsewhere, but I thought Henne played a great game last night. He showed a lot of good signs with his decision making. He wasn’t flustered under pressure. A play that sticks out in my mind was the big screen to Williams in the first quarter. He timed it perfectly and got all the defenders caught upfield.

As for the Wildcat, Pace can think whatever he wants about it, but the fact of the matter is it worked. If you don’t like it, stop it, and they’ll stop running it.

The Dolphins had a great gameplan and executed it perfectly. They were the better team last night. Does that mean they’ll be better after a 16 game season, who knows? We’ll see what adjustments the Jets make for the second meeting.

The Wildcat is a formation that only works when the team’s defense plays well. It is hard to run the wildcat when down by 2 or more scores. The key is keeping the game close. If it was as good as people say it is today, the Fins would be 5-0, not 2-3.

but we lost that game because Peyton Manning may be Jesus, and our defense allowed too many ridiculously long touchdown passes.

pace comments

pace was out of line, but only because he was frustrated that the D didn’t do the job…you can’t vilify the guy: football is a very emotional sport and the players react that way sometimes when they get embarrassed…what are you gonna do?…the jets got beat, the fish have a great rushing game, henne was very good…and the jets D just didn’t get the job done…everything else is just noise…maybe it’ll shake out a little differently in the meadowlands…most of the miami fans who find their way here behave reasonably, but IMHO some of them sound like children…grow up, kids…
